SCS Software previews Iceland DLC Churches for ETS 2

SCS Software has given the community a new preview of its upcoming Iceland DLC. This time, they’re showcasing a selection of churches players will be able to find around Iceland.

First up, they preview Hallgrímskirkja in the capital city of Reykjavík, which was built in the 20th century. They note that this church has a lot of superlatives, with its tower being 73 metres tall, the largest in the country. The church is also home to Iceland’s largest organ, though they note you won’t be able to see this church up close.

They then give us a look at Akureyrarkirkja, a Lutheran church in the city of Akureyri, which is set on the shore of the Eyjafjörður fjord and framed by mountains.

A few hours away in Blönduós is Blönduóskirkja, which SCS notes is a striking example of modern architecture in the small town.

Next we head east to the shores of Lake Mývatn and the town of Reykjahlíð, where they give us a preview of Reykjahlíðarkirkja. During the 1729 Krafla eruption, lava destroyed much of the town, but the wooden church was spared when the flow split and passed just mere metres from its walls. Since then, the church has been rebuilt twice.

Now over on the eastern coast, they show us the small church of Seyðisfjarðarkirkja, which is one of Iceland’s most recognisable landmarks. It’s distinctive colours and design have made it well known among visitors. The street leading up to it was temporarily painted rainbow colours back in 2015, but was later made permanent in 2019 due to it being a huge hit with tourists, and it looks like SCS has included this in the DLC.

Travelling onwards south, SCS gives us a preview of Víkurkirkja, which is perched on a hillside above the village of Vik. SCS points out that it’s red roof and white walls stand out sharply against the dark volcanic landscapes, making it one of the most photographed spots on Iceland’s south coast in the real world, and it looks like they’ve done a good job of replicating this in the simulator.

Lastly, we get a few more previews of some other churches, though they note that their surroundings are still in early stages of development, and so they’re shown in a placeholder location. The screenshots below show Ísafjarðarkirkja, and Húsavíkurkirkja.

While that’s the end of the previews from SCS, you may have noticed that this has also confirmed some of the towns and cities in the DLC. To recap, the cities/towns/villages mentioned in today’s post were Reykjavík, Blönduós, Reykjahlíð, Seyðisfjörður, Vík, and Selfoss. The last two images in placeholder locations will also eventually be in Ísafjörður and Húsavík.
